THE ARTEMUS GROUP LAUNCHES COMPREHENSIVE
TRAINING PROGRAM FOR THE SHIPPING INDUSTRY

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - With hundreds of thousands working in the shipping industry worldwide and regional labor pools diminishing, how do shippers, freight forwarders and ocean carriers ensure both their new and existing staff understands every facet of the business from how to produce a bill of lading to quoting rates?  Until recently, they had to develop their own internal training programs, but thanks to The Artemus Group, a series of basic training courses are now available to the industry.

The Artemus Group, which offers transportation software applications, Internet applications, training and job placement services, created the 4-day program known as "Shipping 101 tm" to address all aspects of the export and import process. It allows employees within the industry and those just entering it, from customer service representatives to information technology executives, to gain a detailed knowledge of the ocean shipping process. The program also helps to create an educated and knowledgeable labor pool within the shipping industry for temporary and permanent placement.

Participants go through a series of classroom lectures and hands-on exercises such as creating a booking, along with visiting a local terminal.  Each candidate receives a certificate upon completing the course, which includes the following sections and topics:

  • Introduction to Globalizations of Trade
  • Shipping Geography
  • Rate Quotation & Tariff
  • Booking Cargo
  • Equipment Management & Control
  • Intermodal Transportation
  • Export Documentation
  • Terminal & Marine Operations/ Vessel Stow & Load
  • Vessel Arrival/ Import Documentation
  • Rolls of Intermediaries and their critical work processes

According to Steven Pniewski, President, this one-of-a-kind program has generated a very favorable response from ocean carriers, forwarders, imports, exporters and start up business owners throughout the Hampton Roads area. "There is obviously a sizeable investment for companies to develop their own internal training curriculum and our program is very affordable for any sized carrier or individual participant," said Pniewski.  "With our team's vast knowledge of the industry, we saw the opportunity to offer this program as a way of expanding the knowledge base of those working in the industry.  We are also one of the few ‘neutral' businesses and an existing outsource alternative with our agency and IT services, so this is an obvious extension to the services we offer the ocean shipping industry."

Pniewski noted there is a real demand for temporary replacement staff within the Hampton Roads region, as well as the entire shipping community. "As with any industry, there are upturns and downturns in the market and many organizations do not have enough qualified staff during these transition periods. The development of a temporary pool of experienced replacement staff will allow organizations to keep costs down, while still providing high service quality," he said.  "What people need to realize is even with all the new technologies and regulations coming into play, there will always be a need for a qualified and well-educated workforce in the shipping industry and training certainly plays a key role in that."

Pniewski also brought up that later this year, Artemus Group will deploy a series of online training to allow those not able to attend a classroom version of the Shipping 101 course, to take the entire course online through the company's website.  "Artemus Group realizes that so much of our industry is influenced by the process work and data entry of those who live outside the U.S.  This online version will not only help those in our industry who cannot attend a live course in the U.S. but also open the course to those who trade with the U.S. worldwide."

Artemus Group other course offerings will be going online including Hazardous Cargo Handling Certification and Re-Certification, Import Documentation and Export Documentation.
